Idea 3: Self-Watering Two-Piece Wick Vessel
Setup Method
Assembling a self-watering two-piece wick vessel creates a functional sub-irrigation planter system that feeds moisture to plant roots automatically through capillary action. Model a deep outer reservoir bowl from a smooth half-inch terracotta clay slab, smoothing the exterior walls with a damp sponge until seamlessly rounded. Sculpt a separate inner planting cup designed to rest suspended inside the outer reservoir rim, featuring three small bottom holes to thread cotton wicks through. Coat the entire interior of the lower reservoir bowl with two coats of gloss waterproof sealant to prevent water from seeping through the porous terracotta base onto furniture surfaces. Leave the upper planting cup interior unsealed so the clay wall breathes naturally while the cotton wick draws standing water upward from the reservoir below. Allow both pieces to cure completely before assembling the sub-irrigation unit, creating an ideal low-maintenance planter for humidity-loving indoor ferns or tropical foliage.
