Idea 8: Carved Sunburst Cylinder Cachepot
Execution Process
Constructing a carved sunburst cylinder cachepot decorates thick terracotta container walls with deep geometric radial incisions that highlight raw clay color tones. Slab-build a straight-sided cylindrical pot measuring six inches in diameter and six inches in height, ensuring the wall thickness measures a solid half-inch. Allow the assembled terracotta cylinder to dry until it reaches a leather-hard state where the clay feels firm yet yields cleanly to cutting tools. Use a V-shaped linoleum carving gouge to slice radiating sunburst lines outward from a central point on the front face of the pot. Carve deeper groove channels toward the outer edges of the pattern to create dramatic light and shadow contrasts across the textured surface relief. Wipe away loose clay shavings with a soft dry brush, allowing the carved cachepot to finish air drying before applying a light wax coat to protect the exterior.
